The Easy Way to Get Your Website Indexed by the Search Engines
What I’m about to tell you some internet marketing gurus will charge you a hefty price for. However, I’m really tired of seeing some charge such hefty prices for teaching some that is so incredibly simple to do.
If you plan to run a business online, search engine marketing is absolutely crucial to the success of your site. Although I caution against making it your primary way of marketing your business, it is still a technique you want to consider when promoting your business.
(Because search engine algorithms change, focusing all of your attention on search engine optimization and marketing may become a full time job.)
Don’t discount the importance of search engine optimization and marketing though. Because so many people use the search engines to find things, you want to make sure your site is indexed and included.
The first step is to choose the keywords that you will use for your website (This is actually a step you need to do before building your website. If you didn’t do this, you may have to rewrite some of the content on your website to make sure your website is optimized for the correct terms.)
Optimize your website for the search engines. There’s plenty of free software available on the internet to help you do this.
Once you have optimized your website, you want to create a sitemap for your website unless your website already has a way to do this. (Some content management scripts include a sitemap generator. All you have to do is use the sitemap generator included in your website to generate your sitemap.)
Do a search on the internet for the three major search engines: Google, Yahoo, and MSN. These three sites handle about 80 percent of the search traffic. For Google, you will search for Google Sitemaps. For Yahoo, you need to search for Yahoo Explorer, and for MSN, search for “Submit to MSN.”
Google and Yahoo will require you to have an account, but it’s free. If you don’t have an account with either site, sign up for one. Once you have signed up and verified your account, then start by logging into Google Sitemaps.
Follow the instructions for submitting your sitemap to Google and verifying your website. You will need to do the same thing through Yahoo. After you have submitted to these two sites, then go to MSN and submit your site. MSN wants you to submit the link to your domain, but if you have a sitemap, then submit the link to your sitemap.
Once you have submitted your sites, Google will begin indexing your site almost immediately. Yahoo and MSN will also start indexing your sites. At least 80 percent of your search traffic will come from these websites so don’t discount how important it is to submit your website.
There you have it. My $500 advice for getting your site indexed in the major search engines.
